Her husband got up with a sigh and gazed at the arm-chair where he had been so comfortably seated a moment earlier.

“What time is there still a train for Belgium?”

“There’s only the night train now, at 9.30 p.m. It gets into Liège about six in the morning.”

“Will you pack my suitcase?” the Inspector said to his wife.

“How about a drink, Lucas? Help yourself. You know the cupboard. I’ve just got some of the plum brandy my sister-in-law makes herself, in Alsace. It’s the long-necked bottle…” He dressed, removed Clothing B from the yellow fibre suitcase, wrapped it up well, and put it into his travelling-bag.

Half an hour later, he left, accompanied by Lucas, who asked him while they were waiting for a taxi:

“What is this case? I haven’t heard it mentioned back at H.Q.”

“I don’t know much more about it myself,” the Inspector admitted. “ This odd sort of fellow died, right in front of me, idiotically, and there’s a hell of a mix-up over what he did which I’m trying to sort out. I’ve been rushing at it like a wild boar, and I wouldn’t be surprised if I didn’t get my knuckles rapped for my pains. Here’s a taxi! Shall I drop you in town?” It was eight in the morning when he left the Hôtel du Chemin de Fer, facing the Guillemins station, in Liège. He had bathed and shaved; under his arm he was carrying a parcel containing not the whole of Clothing B, but only the coat. He found the rue Haute-Sauvenière, a steep, very busy street, and asked for Morcel’s, the tailor. It was a poorly lit house, and a man in shirt-sleeves took the coat and turned it over and over in his hands, asking questions:

“It’s a very old thing,” he declared, after considering it. “It’s torn. There’s nothing to be done with it…”

“It doesn’t convey anything to you?”
